Vertt wasn’t aware of any particular problems with their AWS spendings. But, as soon as the dev team discovered the AWS Cost Explorer tool - they managed to take the matters into their own hands.

Before Microtica: lack of awareness of the importance of reducing AWS costs

Vertt is a ride-hailing startup based in Switzerland that offers a convenient, efficient, and secure transportation service. Established in 2017, Vertt has a strong goal right from the outset. Vertt is devoted to addressing the very few gaps in the Swiss transportation system. They innovate to offer a solution to society that people don’t even know they need.

Vertt has been one of Microtica’s very first clients, using the CI/CD automation solution since the beginning. Their team includes full-stack and mobile developers, who used Microtica to fill in the gap of lacking dedicated DevOps professionals.

When it came to AWS spendings, the team wasn’t aware that they could save more until they came across the Cloud Waste Management feature in the Microtica Dashboard. This made them realize that they could reduce AWS costs when the system isn’t in use.

“Occasionally, we would glance at the AWS Cost Explorer and Billing sections to check for any unusual data. But we never took a deeper dive to inspect any unnecessary costs and take action to reduce AWS costs.”

Full-stack engineer at Vertt

Coming across a solution: using the Cloud Waste Manager feature to regulate AWS spendings efficiently

As the team wasn’t aware of any particular problems with their AWS spendings, they noticed the new feature in the Microtica Dashboard and contacted our team to find out more.

That’s when one of our developers made a quick demo for the Vertt team, showing them how the tool works and how to set it up. The onboarding went extremely fast, and the Vertt dev team managed to take the matters into their own hands in no-time.

The team got used to the Cloud Waste Manager immediately. Firstly, every member got introduced to this new feature with a simple memo. Secondly, it was explained to them how to percicely adjust, enable and disable it when needed. After that, they activated the Cloud Waste Manager on their development and staging environment. This had an influence on their AWS RDS, EC2 nodes, and ElasticCache.

Outcome: discovering the power of Microtica

Since Microtica’s Saving Schedules offer several different possibilities to filter the resources which you would want to turn off, the Vertt team took advantage of this functionality. They, for instance, use the most convenient method: they select an entire environment and turn off all the resources in that environment for a particular time period when they are off work. They apply this to both of their non-production environments: development and testing. Each of these schedules brings 68% of savings for the team. Similarly, after several months of use, they noticed around 40% savings in the billing for RDS only on AWS.

By using the Saving Schedules and the Cost Explorer the team keeps up with their predefined budget month after month. In other words, their cost varies only 1-2%. This was especially important to the team, as they were a startup at the time and cared greatly about reducing their unnecessary spending whenever possible.

In conclusion, with Microtica’s Cloud Waste Manager the team can now perform their daily development and testing while saving on resources that would otherwise be unutilized.
